Las Coloradas Air Tour: Yucatán's pink lagoons from the air
Have you ever seen a completely pink lagoon? Las Coloradas, in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of those places that seems from another planet. And the best way to appreciate it is from the air.
What are Las Coloradas?
Las Coloradas is a complex of high-salinity lagoons located in the municipality of Río Lagartos, Yucatán. The pink color of its waters is due to a combination of microorganisms, salt, and brine shrimp (artemia). It's the same reason the pink flamingos that inhabit the area have their characteristic color.
Additionally, Las Coloradas is home to the only salt producer in Mexico that makes Fleur de Sel, a gourmet product valued worldwide.
Why see it from the air?
By land, Las Coloradas is over 3 hours from Cancún. But the true magic of this place reveals itself from above:
- The contrast of colors between the pink, white, and turquoise lagoons is spectacular from the air
- The salt mountains stacked next to the lagoons create a surreal landscape
- The pink flamingos can be seen in massive flocks, like pink clouds over the water
- The Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve in its full extent
Aerial photos of Las Coloradas are among the most shared on social media — and for good reason.
